San Marcos Creek Project Update for July 2020

Our Neighborhood. Our Creek.
Construction Activities
This upcoming week, the following construction activities are planned in the San Marcos Creek area.
  • Tree Removal on Via Vera Cruz and Bent Avenue: Trees will be removed on Via Vera Cruz (between West San Marcos Boulevard and Discovery Street) and Bent Avenue (between Creekside Drive to West San Marcos Boulevard) starting early next week in preparation for bridge and storm drain work. To remove the trees, the construction team needs to reduce traffic down to one lane on both Via Vera Cruz and Bent Avenue, with flaggers in place directing traffic. The tree removal is anticipated to take four days to complete.
  • Bent Avenue Closure: Bent Avenue remains closed to thru-traffic between Discovery Street and Creekside Drive, so the bridge over the San Marcos Creek can be constructed. The Bent Avenue bridge construction is expected to last a year.
Detours will be clearly marked, and businesses will be open. To help you safely navigate the Creek area, we’ve put together a video on what to expect and detours for all drivers. Bent Avenue Closure Video
Upcoming Construction Activities
  • Discovery Street and Via Vera Cruz Traffic Shift: Discovery Street between Via Vera Cruz and Joy Court and Via Vera Cruz between Honeyglen Drive and Discovery Street will be reduced to one lane as construction crews begin setting up a road detour for motorists during levee and road construction. Flaggers will be in place to direct traffic.
  • Signal Modifications on Bent Avenue and Via Vera Cruz: The traffic signal will be modified so the construction team can optimize the signal during the Bent Avenue closure.
What to Expect
Construction hours are Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. In some areas of the Creek Project, construction hours may begin earlier than stated.
We highly recommend drivers find alternative routes and avoid the creek construction area. In the construction zone, please be mindful of the reduced speed limits. Drivers must adhere to the 25 mph speed limit for the safety of construction crews and others. Please remember to Honk Less and Wave More to keep San Marcos roads safe and friendly.
Amid the COVID-19 outbreak, construction crews are taking all recommended precautions to stay healthy and safe by following the guidance from public health officials, practicing social distancing and frequent hand washing on the construction site.
