“If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him; you know him, for He dwells with you, and will be in you.”

– Jesus , John 14:15-17

“Recall then that you have received the spiritual seal, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of right just and courage, the spirit of knowledge and reverence, the spirit of holy fear in God’s presence. Guard what you have received. God the Father has marked you with his sign; Christ the Lord has confirmed you and has placed his pledge, the Spirit, in your hearts.”

– St. Ambrose, On the Mysteries, 7, 42: PL 16

Confirmation at St. Mark’s

Baptized Catholics must receive the Sacrament of Confirmation “at the appropriate time.” In order to be confirmed, a person must be “suitably instructed, properly disposed, and able to renew one’s baptismal promises (Code of Canon Law 890, 889.2).”

In the Diocese of San Diego, the bishop has set the age for the Sacrament of Confirmation at 15 years old in ordinary circumstances. At St. Mark’s Roman Catholic Church the Sacrament of Confirmation is normally received in the tenth grade year, following a two year Catechetical preparation.

Preparation to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation consists of weekly classes throughout the school year, completion of community service, and a retreat in November of the second year group and January for the first year group. The goal of this preparation period is to train those who are to be confirmed in the basic doctrine of the Catholic Faith, to instruct them concerning the Sacrament of Confirmation, and to prepare them to live out a life in union with Jesus and the Catholic Church.

bishop_brom_confirming_editedWe have a two year program at Saint Mark’s, Our 1st year group meets on Monday nights from 6:30 to 8:30pm at the Saint JPII Building. Our 2nd year group meets on Wednesday Nights from 6:30 to 8:30pm at the healy Hall Center.

St. Mark’s is teeming with Catholic youth! As a result of this blessing, the Confirmation program has about 450 kids preparing to receive the grace of the Spirit every year! The costs of such a program, including books, Catechetical resources, retreats, etc., could not be supported by the parish without the generosity of the parishioners, in particular, the parents of the candidates for Confirmation. The cost for the program is $60 per student each year. However if there are two students enrolled from the same family it is $100 total, or $130 for 3 students from the same family. For families who may have a difficulty in making this payment scholarship arrangements can be made. Money will not be a reason why anyone cannot participate in the preparation process.

For more information about the Confirmation program please come to the Office for Youth Ministry or contact Fawaz Yasi at (760) 744-5429 or by email at
